Recently someone wrote me a note about how she’s read and re-read my Transitions book and how valuable it is. I was touched by the note.
I asked what some of her favourite passages were, and here’s one that she mentioned – an explanation of Transition.
TRANSITION is an internal process. Transition is about the meaning you make of change. Transition is a process you go through as you come to terms with inner or outer change.
Because transition is an inner process, it may be hard to describe. You may not have language to communicate the inner stirrings and shifts you experience as you move through a transition time.
The transition process results in changes within you, perhaps even a new version of you. Your perception of who you are and your place in the world may be profoundly different after a transition. Because transition is about your perceptions, intuitions, worldview and self-identity, the result of a transition may not be visible to others unless you choose to express it in some way.
A transition may be triggered by changes in an external situation, or it may be triggered because you are ready to move to a new level of development. For example, losing your job or becoming a parent is an external change that might trigger an inner process of transition. On the other hand, the adolescent transition from child to adult consciousness is pre-programmed to happen even if nothing changes in the child’s external situation. Sometimes during adulthood, even if nothing major is changing in your outer world, you may feel the stirrings of an inner transition because, “It is time.”
Transition is not inevitable. You may experience many changes but if your perceptions, emotions, ways of thinking, habits and identity remain the same, you have not experienced transition.
Transitions: Pathways to the Life and World Your Soul Desires
by Bonnie Hutchinson)
With all the changes going on in the world, we are all impacted by big changes. We may also be experiencing changes in our personal and work lives. And sometimes, even if nothing in changing in the outer world, we can feel that something is changing within us. That can take us into the Transition zone – where we know that something is ending but we cannot be certain what is ahead. Transition times don’t have guideposts. Our usual skills and coping mechanisms may not help.
The book, Transitions: Pathways to the Life and World Your Soul Desires, has insights, tools and steps to help you ride the waves of transition. The book is soon going to be available on Amazon in print, Kindle and audio forms. Watch for an announcement!
I’d love to hear from you
Are you in a transition time? And if you are, what are some of the things you notice? What’s one thing that is helping you during this time?
