By J. K. Rowling
Little Brown & Company, 2015
Published just a few months ago, this little booklet contains the Harvard commencement speech that J. K. Rowling gave in 2008. Her two themes are “The Fringe Benefits of Failure” (of which you received a snippet above), and “The Importance of Imagination” (which is not about writing best-selling novels, but about the capacity for empathy). Very Good Lives has become one of my current bedside books.
Sales of Very Good Lives benefit Lumos, a charity founded by J. K. Rowling that works to end the institutionalization of children globally and ensure all children grow up in a safe and caring environment.
